Interjú Gennady Semykinnel az orosz Endless Winter kiadó fejével

Tudnál mesélni a kezdetekről?

A kiadódat Illés András jóvoltából ismerhettem meg, aki a magyar Dreams After Death zenekart csinálja.

A helyzet valamivel jobb a stúdióprojectekkel.

Dead Pages by Di Mortales

Ahogy látom, te nézelődsz a Facebookon.

Szeretem a melódiáit, kellemesek számomra, mintegy behangolják a gondolataimat, a kedvemet. Gyerekként ahogy meghallottam a Black Sabbathot, egyből tudtam, melyik az a műfaj, amit a legjobban szeretek. Sokminden változott azóta, a zene sokat fejlődött, érzelemdúsabb, így érdekesebb is.

Hallgatsz más zenéket is?

Egyébiránt a csendet preferálom. Úgyhogy inkább hallgatok doomot vagy semmit.

Az Endless Winternek van egy alkiadója a Visceral Laments. Tervezed folytatni a munkát azzal?

Több figyelmet kapott a kiadód 2017-ben 2016-hoz képest?

English version:

The Russian scene is one of the most interesting scenes for me to construe as for the activity of labels as well as the bands. It is said that the Russians are short-spoken, brusque, and they don’t rush with the answers, but one thing is sure: they are reliable and trustworthy. I think this is more important than the surface. Once you are attuned to the Russians’ unique inner nature, you won’t be disappointed.. Here is a tuning…

Could you please tell me how it all began? When did you decide to create the label?

In the 00s MySpace and different forums allowed me to make friends with many interesting artists. I found out that lots of interesting music was not represented in the market. That’s when the idea to publish the works of these artists came to my mind. To some extent the label was created to support new or little-known bands. The decision was made at the end of 2009, and the first album was released on January 1st, 2010.

I’ve noticed that the label’s homepage has changed. The new one is very nice. Did you do it yourself?

I changed the design of the website several times and kept making it better. The new version was created under supervision of a professional designer, but the website itself was made with my own hands. I prefer not to use ready-made templates, because in 99 percent of cases the websites look alike.

I know your label thanks to Andras Illes who is the member of the Hungarian band Dreams After Death. Do you two stay in touch?

I’ve released one of his albums. I think he is very talented and a good person. At the moment we have little contact since there are no occasions for communication. I’m looking forward to his new album, but, unfortunately, there is none yet. I’ve been waiting for it for a couple of years now. When the album is finally ready, I would be happy to release it (if he asks for it, of course).

What do you think about the Russian metal scene? Which bands deserve more attention?

I can’t say anything about the metal scene since I don’t know it well enough. I can speak for doom metal only, as I’m more aware about this particular trend. I see it as a profound darkness where occasional sparks appear and burn out quickly. There is only a handful of good bands that are productive and exist for quite a long time. You can say that we don’t have a doom metal scene at all: you can’t gather a good set of bands for even an annual festival, like Shadow Doom Fest or Moscow Doom Fest. The situation is a bit better with studio projects. There are people who are talented and create good music. But I would like to listen to them and see them in person at live shows, but, alas, this is impossible.

Do you visit live shows?

Oh, yes, I try to visit live shows, but, unfortunately this happens very rarely due to the reasons I’ve said before. We have small or almost non-existent doom metal movement and I’m not interested in other musical styles.

I saw some photos with Vitaly from the GS productions. Was it a friends meeting or maybe something about collaboration between the labels?

I got it, you browse the Facebook page. There were some photos there. Yes, we’ve met many times. He is my good friend; we know each other for many years now. And of course we cooperate in musical sphere as well and distribute our products. He has released a lot of interesting doom metal projects that are very popular, and I help him with distribution. He, in turn, promotes the albums I’ve released.

Why doom metal actually?

I believe that it is the most harmonious and varied metal genre. I like doom metal melodies, they seem pleasant to me and in tune with my own thoughts and mood. As a child I listened to Black Sabbath and I already knew which music I like the most. A lot has changed since then, the music has become more advanced, more intellectual and, thus, more interesting.

Do you listen to any music?

No, almost not, I don’t have time for that. I can listen to some good death or grind, but I never listen to black or folk – they annoy me. People of my age who got stuck in the 70s are still crazy for Deep Purple or Pink Floyd, but not me – I got sick and tired of them back then. In any case I prefer silence. So I listen to doom or to nothing at all.

Endless Winter has a sub-label Visceral Laments. Do you plan to continue working with it? What is the difference between EW and VL?

VL was created for the bands whose genre doesn’t have doom in it. Unfortunately, I receive few offers from really interesting bands of other genres. I would be happy to release some good gothic or symphometal, but there is no queue for the label.

You didn’t have that many releases in 2016, but the situation changed in 2017. Do you feel that your label gets more attention in comparison with 2016?

Everything is ok, the work is in progress. I’ve received many interesting offers, and I’ve found and approached some bands myself, thus, there was much more work this year. Some albums that were released this year turned out to be really good. It’s only natural that they received recognition.

You don’t really work with partner labels. As I noticed it happened only two times. Why?

It’s because I don’t see much sense in joint releases. Sometimes it gets so absurd that there are 10 labels on the cover. What for? To release every one of them from responsibility? I can’t approve of it. I made co-releases only twice because I’ve worked with very controversial materials at the intersection of different genres. It was hard to identify the genre, thus, I deemed it possible to engage other publishers that are less connected with doom metal. In conclusion I would like to say that words mean nothing. The key is to listen to the music and expand your horizons and that’s all you need to be happy.
