Sanctus Infernum interview

Sanctus Infernum cannot be unkown for those, who regularly reads Fémforgács, since a critic has already borned about their debut album, and getting really excited about its deepness and stronge depressive themes, i got into a little talking with Mark Anderson via e-mails. But i won’t take your time, let’s what were they about!
First of all, Mark, thank you for the opportunity for this interview, please tell us about the band. Who plays on what, how old are they and how many years ago did they start to play an instrument?

Thank you Zoli, I appreciate the opportunity as well. The band consists of myself on guitar, Ricky Vannatta on vocals, Chris Johnson on drums, and Jason Banks on bass. We actually have very similar stories. We’re all in our thirties and each of us started playing in the late-1980’s. There was so much good music coming out at that time it was hard not to be inspired by it.

We can bravely say that Jumali Katani did a perfect job on the cover, but I don’t fully understand why the Solitude Productions is the distributor… hown well known are you in your country and what are the bands your coutry could be proud of?

Jumali‘s an amazing artist and he’s been great to work with. We’d been trying to find an artist locally with no real luck. Then Chris came into rehearsal one night and told us about this guy he found at www.myspace.com/metal_artist . We brought up his page and looked at his gallery and knew immediately we had found our guy. Needless to say he’s doing the artwork for the next album.

How we came to work with Solitude Productions is an interesting story. I wanted to find a label that catered to doom metal and I had read about them. When we had some tracks finished we posted them on our MySpace page and sent an e-mail asking them to check out the songs. They liked what they heard and asked if we could send them some more, which we did. They liked that as well and told us they would be interested in releasing the album. It’s worked our very well. They’ve been totally professional and very easy to work with. I really couldn’t be any happier with the situation.

We aren’t that well known over here yet. The album came out in March and we started doing gigs right around the same time so we’re still fairly new. Everything has went very well so far though. We really like the way things look going forward.

As far as bands from this country go, there are many to be proud of, more than I could name. Some of my favorites would have to be Morbid Angel, Solitude Aeturnus, Manilla Road, Death, Van Halen, Metallica, Cynic, Fates Warning and Pantera just to name a few.

How would you describe the Sanctus Infernum‘s style and in general what should we know about the band?

I’d say we’re a doomdeath band with a mixture of black metal and other things. We don’t really try to fit into any particular genre, essentially our style is just a product of our collective influences and musical sensibilities. The idea for us is to let the music happen as naturally as possible, almost let the music create itself to some extent. Each of us listen to a fairly wide variety of music, which certainly effects our overall sound, but doom and death metal are without question are the foundation of our style.

Can you tell me a name which was your favourite in your childhood and is still one today?

Black Sabbath. I never get tired of listening to them, they’re absolutely timeless. Trends in metal have come and gone but they are and will always remain the standard. People usually focus on the Ozzy and Dio eras, and justifiably so, but the stuff with Ian Gillan and Tony Martin is also very good. What can you say about Tony Iommi? He’s just phenomenal, no one has influenced me more as a musician than him.

Would you like to send a message to the readers of Fémforgács?

I’d definitely like to thank them for taking the time to read the interview and check us out. I’d also like to invite them to check out our MySpace page at www.myspace.com/sanctusinfernum .We update it fairly often so everyone can get current news on the band.

Beer or Wine? Haha!

BEER!!! Preferably Heineken, but anything in a bottle will do.

Something you’d like to say at the end?

I’d like to thank you again for the interview and album review, we truly appreciate the support. Hopefully we can get over to Europe and do some shows in the near future.

Thanks for the interview Mark and take care!
